Anni Blog October 1, 2016

Hello to All! Happy Autumn to you! I’m writing this on the last day of September, as I want to remind y’all of a very cool gig happening on October 1st at Elements in Biddeford (ME)… details about the show are in the Targets Section… yet, I’ll tell you here… this is an up & coming venue with a lot to offer. Elements just had a great write up in the Arts Section of the Portland Press Herald with a glowing review… so if you still are not in the loop on this one, please check it out. I am PSYCHED to be performing there for the 2nd time on October 1st! I have a lot of catching up to do before that show… just got back from a week on the road… but more on that in the Cerebral Wanderings Section. So here’s the scoop, in this order:

1. THE OCT / NOV SHORT LIST (Date, Venue, Time Only)
2. TARGET GIGS (Full Details)
3. CURRENT CEREBRAL WANDERINGS
4. PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE

1. THE OCT / NOV SHORT LIST (Date, Venue, Time Only)

FRI, OCT 7 / JJ’s / Old Orchard Beach ME / 6:30PM
FRI, OCT 21 / Ocean Pizza / Old Orchard Beach ME / 7PM
FRI, OCT 28 / Toddy Brook / N Yarmouth ME / 6PM
SAT, NOV 5 / Swan River House Concerts / W Dennis MA
(Reservations Needed… only 25 seats… INFO in Targets)
FRI, Nov 18 / Ocean Pizza / Old Orchard Beach ME / 7PM

2. TARGET GIGS (Full Details)

SATURDAY / OCTOBER 1st / ELEMENTS / BIDDEFORD ME / 8PM / 207-710-2011… I had heard wonderful things about this Bookstore / Cafe / Concert Venue, so I went to check it out when my pal Jim Gallant was performing… LOVED IT, so I made contact with the gal who books the shows & we booked my debut in June (this past June.) October 1st will be my 2nd time performing here & I can’t wait! If you’re a fan of intimate spaces where artist & audience can easily connect, this is the place for you. The food offerings are eclectic & healthy & YES, they have beer & wine. Performers are paid by tips & a percentage of food & bar sales… so bring your friends, eat, drink, sing along & maybe find “The Heart of Saturday Night” (that’s a song, by the way)… Here’s their [website].

FRIDAY / OCTOBER 7th / JJ’S EATERY / OLD ORCHARD BEACH ME / 6:30PM / 207-934-0222… this is a fave hang for the locals, including yours truly. I play every OTHER 1st Friday & I always arrive with bells on, as they say. (I actually DID pick somebody up at the airport once with bells on, cos I told ‘im I’d do that… I’ve been known to do weirder things. Yet, I digress…) If you’ve not been to JJ’s yet, I’m scratchin’ my head & shakin’ my finger at you! This is an all ages hang with great food & beverages & a fun, dedicated staff. I suggest y’all come early & stay late! Here’s their [website].

FRIDAY / OCTOBER 21st / OCEAN PIZZA / OLD ORCHARD BEACH ME / 7PM / 207-934-2900… one of several close-to-my-home faves; yet THIS ONE has one feature that all the others do not… Pam (the owner, French chef extraordinaire, all around warm & wonderful person & lover of life) will NOT allow any cover tunes to be played here! Yep, you read that right, folks… it’s ALL ANNI TUNES here… which is brilliant in so many ways… but for ME? I get to run through my catalogue of originals, dust off the ones in the library that may be on the back burner of my brain & re-experience all those songs I haven’t been performing in rooms where covers need to be part of the mix. Fabulous idea & so much fun. And the food? Pam stole her Grandma’s recipes before she crossed over from France to the US (& lucky US, in OOB!) If you ain’t tried it, the time is now… here’s their [website].

FRIDAY / OCTOBER 28th / TODDY BROOK GOLF COURSE / N YARMOUTH ME / 6PM / 207-829-5100… This is a Golf Club Venue & Restaurant with a small bar area & lots of windows in the room where I’ll be singin’. EVERY TIME I play here is such a great time! So Chris (the owner) & I have decided we need to keep doing it. I’m a Yarmouth native… this spot is just over the town line in N Yarmouth, but it feels like home to me. The food’s great, the view’s inspiring, the people are wicked friendly & my voice floats nicely in this room… Check out Toddy Brook [here].

SATURDAY / NOVEMBER 5th / SWAN RIVER HOUSE CONCERTS / WEST DENNIS MA / 5PM / 802-233-5319… RESERVATIONS ONLY… there are only 25 seats! OMG, I am so psyched for THIS one! Here’s what $20 includes: Apps at 5:30 (BYOB)… A one hour concert at 6:30… & DINNER at 7:45! This is the creative brainchild of my old friend & fellow songwriter Linda Cullum, who once lived in Yarmouth (my home town) many moons ago. She tells a great story about our coming together back in the 70’s at this [link] that gives you more info & the magic portal to snag a seat. You can call or text Linda as well at the above number. Once you book a seat, she’ll make sure you know how to get there. By the way, I’ve seen many photos taken from Linda’s deck… trust me, you will want to be here… it’ll be a magic night for sure. Oh & Linda will open the show with a few songs of her own!!! SWEET…

FRIDAY / NOVEMBER 18th / OCEAN PIZZA / OLD ORCHARD BEACH ME / 7PM / 207-934-2900… (details above under OCTOBER 21st)

3. CURRENT CEREBRAL WANDERINGS

When I made my decision to retire from my school job, I made a commitment to myself… having been inside 4 walls during the months of September & October for the last 12 years, I decided I would be outside, climbing mountains, walking through the woods & visiting a lot of friends I hadn’t seen for way too long during these favorite months of mine… in between performances here & there & in between, of course. I am off to a grand start in this commitment.

After a glorious time up on Moosehead Lake over Labor Day Weekend & a wonderful, audience connected show at the Village Coffeehouse in New Gloucester ME, I spent time (with a LOT of help from a neighbor) fixing things around my condo… scraping, painting, patching, cleaning, digging out weeds… but when the full moon waxed ever closer, I headed to the Berkshires of MA & CT to visit friends & spend time in an area that has become so memorable to me over the years.

Revisiting the Appalachian Trail in the Berkshires in September

One of the old friends I got to visit during this jam packed but sweet weekend was my pal & soul healer, the Appalachian Trail. My eyes welled when I first spotted the white blazes near the summit at Lion’s Head, overlooking Twin Lakes CT. The view was spectacular; yet, the sight of those blazes was just as stirring. It always feels like coming home to me. I know my feet were there 41 years ago as a through hiker… how cool is THAT?

The following weekend, I loaded my car for a week’s worth of “whatever” & headed to Colebrook NH to hike, play a show, then head out to other friends’ homes, more mountains & adventures. Hiking in Dixville Notch NH is like a coming home, too… after all the years playing music at The Balsams (it WILL reopen folks, just not tomorrow) the views still knock me out & fill me up. After a great hike, my show at The Colebrook Country Club was the icing on the cake… full house, tuned in audience, spontaneous interactions & great conversations after the show. The next day I drove south to Franconia Notch to meet friends from my Balsams days for brunch in Sugar Hill (NH.) Over a fabulous breakfast & a lot of excited, long overdue chatter, we walked outside to see that the clouds had lifted over Franconia Ridge & she was there in all her glory, with a fresh painting of September snow on Mount Lafayette! Three of us hiked up to Lonesome Lake after brunch, a magical spot on the A.T. that I had longed to revisit ever since I walked through in 1975 & stared at that ridge from the lakeside in awe. The view hasn’t changed, but I have… I am even more in awe & more appreciative of this view… AND I have a better camera now.

Franconia Ridge NH, from the Appalachian Trail at Lonesome Lake

Franconia Ridge is special. I couldn’t leave the area without one more good look at her… so 2 of us rode the first morning Tram up Cannon Mtn. & soaked in the windless, blissful sunny start of a Monday on top of the world… Ahhhh… all is well in this moment, I thought. But time to move on, so I headed for Wells River VT. I spent the afternoon & overnight with the one & only Chris Jones… you know, the guy who built The Middle Earth Music Hall in Bradford (VT)? He built it, booked it, ran it with love (& frustration) for years, but then had to pull the plug on it 8 years down the line… bummer… LOVED that venue. He & Sue have a beautiful home in Wells River now… we ate & drank like kings & queens, had a bonfire & told stories well into the night. I WILL go back there… but next, I was on the move to Waterbury VT.

I had forgotten how gorgeous it is in the Waterbury area. My friend Tami lives there on top of a big, long hill, looking out at Camel’s Hump in the Green Mountains. After a long, exhilarating hike through the woods near her home, we feasted & watched the sun set over the ridge… it had been a summer like day, short sleeves & bare feet after hiking… but as soon as the sun slipped down, we grabbed for the layers… yep, fall is definitely here!

Next day, I got to have lunch with fellow musician & long-time pal Chris Kleeman in Ludlow VT… priceless. Then I headed further south through winding hills & fall colors starting to pop more & more. I stayed that night with my friend Kelly Kahler in Wilmington VT… we had so much to catch up on that we made a list & checked things off one by one as we talked, shared & laughed… God, did we laugh… my stomach still hurts. We even fit in a hot tub that night in between grazing on yummy foods & wine… & more laughing. Way overdue… so much fun! En route home the next day, I stopped in Concord NH to have lunch with Carrie French… we’d been unsuccessful in hooking up for too many months… we finally DID it!

Now here comes October… my plans are many. Gigs are duly noted above, but the in betweens will be just as fun & exciting this month. Plans include another trip up to Moosehead Lake… weather looks good, so I’m hoping for another shot at a twilight like this, taken by the wife of Tim Gurshin, my fellow musician friend… that’s Tim in the boat:

I am also going back to Acadia this month (haven’t been there since my college days… WHAT???) & I WILL get back to Nantucket, shooting for the end of the month. I am keeping my commitment to myself… I wrote this last month in this section: “I am learning to be open, flexible, spontaneous. I am quiet & on fire at the same time… a nice combination of me-ness. I’ll take it.” I still feel this is true.

So, once again… as the months unfold, I hope to see many of you along the way… at a show, on a mountaintop, wherever… as always, I am truly appreciative of your continued tuning in to my ramblings, cerebral & otherwise. Send me a thumbs up as I venture into Act 3 of this crazy & wonderful life of mine. I’ll watch for you along the way.

Peace,
